When sexual desire or function begins to change, people often look for a single explanation. Is it hormonal? Psychological? A relationship problem? A consequence of aging? Stress?
Any of these factors may contribute. Yet another important part of the conversation is frequently overlooked: nutrition and overall metabolic health.
Sexual function does not operate independently from the rest of the body. The same systems responsible for circulation, energy production, hormonal regulation, neurological activity, emotional well-being, and metabolic health also influence sexual response.
This is why psychiatrist and sexual health specialist Dr. Barbara Bartlik encourages people to consider sexual wellness within a much broader physiological framework.
“Sexual health is not separate from overall health,” Dr. Bartlik explains. “The same biological mechanisms that support energy, circulation, and hormonal balance also support healthy sexual function.”
Seen from this perspective, changes in libido or sexual performance may sometimes provide useful information about what is occurring elsewhere in the body.
Sexual Function Requires a Healthy Biological Foundation
Healthy sexual response depends heavily upon circulation.
Blood flow is essential to sexual arousal in both men and women, which means cardiovascular and vascular health are closely connected to sexual function. Nutritional patterns that support healthy blood vessels may therefore contribute to sexual wellness as part of their broader systemic benefits.
Protein is one important component.
High-quality dietary proteins provide amino acids needed throughout the body. Foods including eggs, fish, poultry, shellfish, beef, and other protein sources provide building blocks involved in tissue maintenance, metabolism, neurotransmitter production, and vascular function.
Dr. Bartlik has specifically discussed amino acids including arginine and carnitine because of their relationship to circulation and vascular physiology.
But amino acids can influence another important part of sexuality: the brain.
Desire Begins in the Brain
Sexuality is physical, but desire is also profoundly neurological.
Certain amino acids obtained through protein contribute to the production of neurotransmitters. Phenylalanine and tyrosine, for example, participate in pathways associated with dopamine.
Dopamine is involved in reward, pleasure, motivation, anticipation, emotional engagement, and sexual interest.
Dr. Bartlik describes dopamine as “the most sex-positive of the neurotransmitters in the brain.”
This provides another reason to move beyond the idea that libido is simply a matter of hormones. Sexual desire emerges from an interaction among endocrine function, neurological signaling, emotional state, physical health, and relationship factors.
When the body lacks important nutritional resources, some of those systems may not operate optimally.
Fatigue Can Become a Sexual Health Issue
Sometimes reduced sexual interest has a surprisingly straightforward contributor: a person simply does not feel well.
Iron deficiency illustrates the point.
Iron is required for hemoglobin and the transport of oxygen throughout the body. When iron levels are inadequate, people may experience fatigue, weakness, reduced concentration, and diminished energy. Those symptoms can understandably affect sexual interest and responsiveness.
Women who menstruate may be particularly susceptible because of recurring blood loss.
Rather than viewing diminished libido exclusively through a psychological or relationship lens, it can therefore be important to consider basic nutritional status as part of a comprehensive evaluation.
Dr. Bartlik emphasizes food-based sources of iron, including red meat, liver, seafood, legumes, lentils, spinach, kale, and other iron-containing foods. Foods rich in vitamin C can also assist the body’s absorption of dietary iron.
The larger principle is important: when a nutritional deficiency exists, improving nutritional status may be one component of addressing the broader health picture.
Healthy Fats Have a Hormonal Role
Fat has spent decades being treated as something people should automatically minimize. Yet the biological story is considerably more complex.
Hormones require raw materials.
Cholesterol participates in the pathways through which the body produces steroid hormones, including testosterone, estrogen, and progesterone.
“Cholesterol is the precursor to the sex hormones,” Dr. Bartlik notes.
This does not mean that unlimited consumption of saturated fat or cholesterol is advisable. Rather, it illustrates why extremely restrictive dietary thinking can overlook important physiological functions.
The type and quality of dietary fat matter.
Foods containing omega-3 fatty acids, along with sources such as fish, nuts, olive oil, and avocado oil, can be incorporated into a nutrient-dense dietary pattern while also supporting cardiovascular and metabolic health.
Again, sexual health and general health intersect.
The Gut-Hormone Connection
The gastrointestinal system may not be the first thing that comes to mind when discussing sexual wellness, but it participates in processes relevant to hormonal regulation.
Hormones do not simply circulate indefinitely. The body continually metabolizes and eliminates hormonal compounds and their metabolites.
Dr. Bartlik emphasizes healthy bowel function as part of this process. When gastrointestinal transit is impaired, the normal elimination of metabolites may also be affected.
A fiber-rich diet containing vegetables, legumes, and other plant foods supports regular bowel function. Fiber also contributes to metabolic health and helps maintain a diverse intestinal microbiome.
The expanding scientific interest in the microbiome reinforces an important concept: the digestive system interacts with endocrine, immune, neurological, and metabolic processes throughout the body.
Sexual wellness is part of that interconnected system.
Inflammation Changes the Conversation
Chronic inflammation represents another important consideration.
Persistent low-grade inflammation has been associated with numerous conditions capable of influencing sexual health, including cardiovascular disease, metabolic dysfunction, obesity, insulin resistance, hormonal disturbances, and mood-related concerns.
As Dr. Bartlik succinctly puts it:
“When inflammation goes up, sex hormones go down.”
Her nutritional philosophy therefore emphasizes nutrient-dense whole foods, vegetables, quality proteins, beneficial fats, and reduced consumption of refined carbohydrates, added sugars, and heavily processed products. She also frequently discusses a Paleolithic-style nutritional model emphasizing whole foods while limiting gluten, excessive alcohol, and highly processed foods.
The objective is broader than sexual performance. It is to create a physiological environment that supports healthier metabolic and hormonal function overall.
What We Eat—and What Food Touches
The conversation may extend beyond food itself.
Certain environmental compounds have attracted attention because of their potential interaction with endocrine systems. Dr. Bartlik specifically raises concerns about plastics containing substances such as bisphenol A, commonly known as BPA.
Such compounds have been studied for potential endocrine-disrupting activity, including their ability to interact with estrogen-related biological pathways.
Reducing unnecessary contact between food and certain plastics, when practical, can therefore become another consideration within a broader lifestyle approach to hormonal wellness.
Sexual Health Is Whole-Body Health
Perhaps the most important message is that sexual wellness should not automatically be isolated from the rest of medicine—or from psychological well-being.
Sexuality reflects an extraordinary convergence of systems.
The cardiovascular system provides circulation. The endocrine system regulates hormones. The nervous system generates sensation and response. Neurotransmitters influence desire, motivation, and pleasure. The gastrointestinal system participates in metabolism and elimination. Nutrition provides many of the biological materials these systems require.
And psychological health influences how people experience all of it.
This is why changes in sexual desire or function deserve a thoughtful, comprehensive approach rather than embarrassment, self-judgment, or an assumption that sexual difficulties are simply an inevitable consequence of getting older.
Nutrition is not the answer to every sexual health concern, nor should it replace appropriate medical or psychological care.
It is, however, an important part of the conversation.
